Ducati Marlboro's Loris Capirossi has taken his second race victory in succession in Malaysia today, with team-mate Carlos Checa on the podium, and Valentino Rossi is now a seven-time Grand Prix Champion.
Ducati and Bridgestone -- who brought 1100 tires to Sepang -- found the perfect set-up in race trim for Capirossi and Checa. ''Capirex'' lit up the rear tire from pole position and led almost every lap, only Rossi squeezing past, twice, to lead briefly before Capirossi re-passed his countryman.
The pair battled wheel to wheel before the Ducati pilot pulled the pin late on, opening a gap of 0.7 seconds with four laps remaining. He was finally able to stride away to take a famous victory, Capirossi finally winning by two seconds from The Doctor.
And, touchingly, Capirossi dedicated his victory to absent project Manager Livio Suppo, who returned to Europe between races following the death of his mother-in-law.
''Today was tougher than Motegi, but Bridgestone brought a great selection of tyres and we worked hard to understand which would be the best for the race. After the start I tried not to use my tyres too much, I wanted to control the race. Then my pit board told me Valentino was coming, and when you have a seven-time World Champion behind you, you know he's coming!''
''I did my best but he overtook, then I did some great laps in the end. I've been racing GPs for 16 years now but my potential is still strong and I want more wins! Thanks to everyone and I want to dedicate this win to Livio.''
Carlos Checa almost passed Rossi for second at the final corner on the last lap, the Spaniard having sliced his way through the field after being pushed wide at the first corner on lap one; the gap between Rossi and Checa just 0.070 seconds at the flag.
The podium line-up at Sepang was the first of the year that did not feature a Honda rider.
Nick Hayden finished fourth after his rear tire went off toward the end of the race, the American in the mix at the front from the start, scrapping with Capirossi and Valentino for the lead. Classic dirt-track style from Nicky along the way but several errors under braking cost the former AMA Superbike champion dearly.
A suffering Marco Melandri came home in fifth, the ankle injury sustained at Motegi finally catching up with the Movistar man. Biaggi couldn't stop Rossi from winning the title, Max finished in sixth.
Sete Gibernau collided with Melandri and Hayden at the first corner from the start, clashed again with Hayden several laps later, and at the end of the same lap went in too hot into the final corner and took himself and Shinya Nakano out of the race.
#15 was far too eager and Sete has now retired from the last three races, and for Nakano, well, he was robbed of any challenge for a podium and was left sitting disconsolate in the gravel.
Kawasaki Team Manager, Harald Eckl, desribed the attempted pass as ''a stupid mistake'', and Nakano has now retired from the last two Grand Prix, an engine failure putting him out of the event in Japan.
Kenny Junior was seventh, John Hopkins ninth and Colin Edwards rounded out the American concern in tenth.
Ducati celebrate a double race victory, their first dual-podium finish in MotoGP, and Valentino Rossi celebrated his title in the usual flamboyant manner.
His fan club dressed up as the ''Seven Dwarfs'' at trackside with the curly-haired Rossi pulling a commemorative t-shirt over his leathers, his seven world titles listed on the back, with a simple ''7'' on the front.
Rossi then cruised back to parc-ferme on the Yamaha M1 with a specially designed white helmet on, again, emblazened with the black number ''7''.
Rossi commented after, ''Last year was more a surprise for everybody. This year we have all the teams, all the other bikes, and all the others riders want to beat me and try 100%, but we win again.''
Rossi took the 125cc crown in 1997, the 250cc title in 1999, the 500cc series win in 2001 and now all four MotoGP titles 2002-2005.
Rossi has a 122 point lead in the championship, and with the title in the bag, the race is now on for the vice-championship. Biaggi, Capirossi, Edwards, Melandri, Hayden and Barros the contenders for second place in the series with four races remaining.
A cracking race, and the action continues next weekend at the Doha circuit in Qatar, Round 14 of the 2005 MotoGP World Championship.

Addition by Subtraction Is Just Bad Arithmetic

Back in June of this year, the FIM announced some rule changes for the MotoGP class, which will take affect for the 2007 season. Whilst the changes had been on the cards for a while, and were hardly a shock when released to the world, the new engine displacement limitation ruling for the MotoGP class has left me questioning the sanity of the men in suits:
''The Grand Prix Commission, composed of Messrs. Carmelo Ezpeleta (Dorna, Chairman), Claude Danis (FIM), Sito Pons (IRTA) and Takanao Tsubouchi (MSMA), in the presence of Mr Paul Butler (Secretary of the meeting), in a meeting held today at the circuit of Mugello, unanimously decided to introduce the modifications below to the Road Racing World Championship Grand Prix Regulations.
2. 2.1 As from January 1st, 2007, in the Motogp class the maximum engine size capacity will be 800cc and 2-stroke engines will not be allowed.''
Rule changes are nothing new. We've seen the governing body and series owners tamper with the rules for many years, often in the name of so-called ''progress''.
The FIM are hoping that by reducing the engine displacement of the MotoGP bikes they will reduce their speed, increase safety and make it easier for the riders to handle the cornering speed of the prototype racing machines.
Unfortunately, I believe the FIM is overlooking one simple fact; you can't stop the engineers catching up.
The proposed drop to 900cc was sold on a 'supposed' safety issue, and the press release from the F.I.M.—when an 800cc was agreed upon (by the majority)—stated the same.
The likes of Sito Pons have brought a little reality to the situation. Pons, and others, have stated what many of us have already worked out for ourselves, that being the obvious; the 800cc era will do nothing to reduce speeds and will make the job of the rider more difficult.
They say you shouldn't always believe what you read, and that adage is a sound one as far as I am concerned. The 800cc four-stroke era will be interesting, but I believe it will cause more problems than it solves and not just in terms of the mechanics of such a change.
Back in the days of early 1990s, the 2-stroke screamers, the vicious power band of the 500cc machines leant themselves well to the highside, bone breaking, bucking bronco type get offs which saw many of the legends eating gravel and tarmac as the bike bit back onto the tarmac on corner exit, under acceleration. The 800cc era may not produce quite the beasts of old, but they won't be far off.
MotoGP is, of course, all about engineering excellence, pushing the boundaries of technology and tasking the best riders in the world with taming the bikes the engineers and designers throw at them; prototype racing is supposed to be this way—but at what cost?
As far as making the racing safer and reducing speed, it simply won't happen, and for me, we will see a return to ''Highside Central''. The smaller bikes will produce, as with the 500cc bikes, vicious output as the engineers send the torque up the curve to get the power required.
Cornering speeds will increase, driveability will decrease, and the result will be highly-strung power and the need to control it to match the new evolution of tires that will need to be designed and refined to deal with the new engine output characteristics.
Tires are now as important as the machines themselves and the smaller riders will find it difficult to control the new power outage and take care of tire wear as they wrestle the smaller and lighter bikes around the circuits of the world. Many of the tracks on the calendar were not built to accommodate the new era machines, cornering speed especially.
This places pressure on the tire manufacturers to find a sound level of grip (side grip especially) to keep the bikes glued to the tarmac and give the rider the feel he needs to be confident with the machine. Power is nothing without control.
If you take, say, a 600cc supersport road-bike, the maximum torque available now isn't much different to the same machines available in the early 1990's, it's just that the manufacturers have pushed the torque number up the rev band so the bikes produce the same torque but at higher revs.
Current 600cc street bikes can kick out in the region of 108 BHP with 45 lb/ft of torque, and that is compared to a decade ago where the 600's were putting out 75 BHP with the same output.
That is a simplistic evaluation, but that is exactly what the factories in the MotoGP class will be doing just with a higher power output than a 600cc road going machine. Electronics will come further into the spotlight to help control the engine management and throttle response. The influx of Formula 1 type technology will increase to aid the manufacturers in controlling the newly found output/torque potential.
In order to do this, the engineers will need to start from scrap, which of course means expenditure will escalate, putting pressure on the likes of Ducati and Suzuki to stay within their budgets. HRC and Yamaha will survive, maybe even Kawasaki, but with spending already at ridiculous levels, I can see a grid of 14-16 runners by the year 2009.
The smaller marques (Team Roberts and WCM) cannot implement a swift change of engineering plans as quickly as the likes of Yamaha and Honda. Re-design costs them dearly in terms of financial outlay and time restraints.
Those restraints have already cost Blata a chance to run their V6 engine in the series this season, and 800cc re-tooling costs were mentioned by KTM as one of the reasons they split with Team Roberts this year. What will happen to these teams when the 800cc era arrives?
That situation will not improve if they think they will have to continually re-design their motor, should the 800cc era last as long as the 990cc will have by the end of the 2006 season—just five years.
This is hardly conducive to how the premier class should look and the F.I.M. may well rue the day they pushed this ruling through. Scrapping a formula that was only introduced in 2002, based on some flimsy notion that the racing will be safer, is futile in my opinion.
I'm not trying to be a doom and gloom merchant, as a new challenge for the technical staff at the factories is always something they seek, but will it work out for the MotoGP series in the long run?
Of course the puritans will state, as I said above, that prototype racing is supposed to be this way. Push forward, ever onward and stretch the aforementioned engineering boundaries to keep the series truly an elite class. However, if we lose manufacturers because the costs soar, just how is that pushing the series forward?
Having engineering excellence on show is great, there are many facets that intrigue millions of fans and analysis experts around the world, but what good is technological brilliance if we lose competitors and end up with a sparse grid?
Do you really want to see ten Honda's and six Yamaha's filling the grid as the other manufacturers drop away?
Is the 800cc era really progress, or the start of trouble ahead?
