    For anyone else still having this issue:

    I took a punt on buying a new ribbon circuit board for the controller because I couldn't see anything else wrong with it - the rubber contacts were spotless along with the buttons, the ribbon cables all intact and connected, and the solid circuit board had no damage - despite there being no visible damage to the ribbon circuit board I figured it was the most likely culprit, so got one off eBay and once it was installed it worked straight away.

    Very easy installation; if you're able to strip the controller down to clean it, you'll be able to install this.
