Ryder Notes: Wet Or Dry It Makes No Odds

For a while it looked as if Dani Pedrosa was going to bury for ever the notion that he can't ride in the wet. In five laps of a streaming wet Sachsenring he opened up a lead of seven-and-a-half seconds before pushing just that fraction too hard and falling at the first corner. He was sliding harmlessly until he hit the gravel trap, after which he tumbled at high speed into the air fence. A broken ankle is suspected and Dani will see his surgeon before making a decision about Laguna.

That left Casey Stoner, who had been admiring Dani's pace from a distance, in front and the Aussie then kept an eye on the gap behind him, setting a run of fastest laps around mid-distance to keep the pursuers behind him.

The only man who looked as if he might be able to race Casey was Valentino Rossi who for once might have been grateful that it rained. On a dry track Vale was 0.4sec off Casey's pace and would have been lucky to get on the rostrum. The wet meant Rossi limited the damage as much as possible and with Pedrosa's crash went back to the top of the table.

That left third place open to someone not in the usual top-three contenders. Edwards has been there twice this year but he crashed while the top Michelin runner, Dovizioso ran second early on but couldn't get enough heat in his tyres to stay with the Bridgestone runners. This is a complete reversal of the tyre situation in scorching temperatures twelve months ago. So regular rain-master Chris Vermeulen worked his way up along with Ant West, who then made an uncharacteristic mistake, and surprise package Alex De Angelis. The Gresini Honda man shadowed Chris for the last two-thirds of the race, looking and learning, but couldn't find a way to pass, so Suzuki got their first rostrum of the year. By the way, Sylvain Guintoli's season's best seventh place came after he switched off a malfunctioning traction control.

Dani Pedrosa's injury is the latest addition to a long list. Hopper is out of Laguna, Loris Capirossi is far from fit, and Ant West cracked vertebrae in a big testing crash. You could probably add Melandri to that list, but as a psychological rather than physical casualty. Laguna is a race everyone enjoys but the Summer break can't come soon enough for a big percentage of the paddock.
