ITO REPLACES CAPIROSSI
Bridgestone test rider Shinichi Ito joins the Ducati Marlboro Team as replacement for Loris Capirossi, who crashed during practice for the Australian GP, suffering chest injuries which have ruled him out of taking part in the Turkish GP.
''It is a great honour to take my place in the Ducati Marlboro Team for the Turkish GP,'' says Ito. ''I know it won't be an easy weekend but I'm looking forward to racing alongside all the full-time MotoGP riders and I will do my best. I have good experience of the Desmosedici, having done many tests with the bike.''
Ito, a former 500 GP racer, now has two roles in his riding career -Japanese Superbike racer and Bridgestone tyre tester. This year he has completed numerous tyre tests with the Bridgestone MotoGP Test Team on a Desmosedici GP5 and last weekend he secured the Japanese Superbike title, riding a Bridgestone-equipped Honda. Ito also won the 1998 Japanese Superbike crown and the 1990 Japanese 500 championship. From 1993 to 1996 he was a full-time 500 GP rider, securing six podium finishes (including second-place finishes at the 1994 Czech GP and 1995 European GP). His best championship result was fifth overall in 1995. He also finished fourth in the first-ever MotoGP race at Suzuka in 2002....egy fecske nem csinál nyarat, viszont egy hülye százat csinál...

Hayden And Melandri To Develop 2006 RC211V
Pedrosa Waits His Turn
by toby hirst
Wednesday, October 19, 2005
The first indication - in a semi-official capacity anyway - as to which ''factory riders'' will develop the 2006 version of the Honda RC211V motorcycle was given this week by General Manager of HRC, Tsutomu Ishii.
Speaking after the Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island, the Japanese controller of all things Honda Racing stated that although new wonder kid Dani Pedrosa will ride for the full works Repsol team for 2006, it will be Nick Hayden and Marco Melandri that will develop the evolution V5 machine.
Hayden, of course, will be Pedrosa's team-mate in Repsol colors next year and as such will ride a factory machine, and Melandri it would seem has been granted Sete Gibernau's full factory slot, run under the Gresini team set-up.
Pedrosa gets the third factory bike but will be enduring a learning season in the MotoGP class, getting to grips with the heavier, faster and more technically advanced 990cc machine following his support class titles in 125cc and 250cc racing.
Ishii stated that the plan was to bed Pedrosa in to the premier class and then turn development of the new 800cc bike over to Pedrosa in 2007.
''The moment has arrived for betting on the young pilots. One has demonstrated that the veterans are not able to beat Rossi and they (the young guns) have to be the leaders'', said Ishii.
He continued, ''In 2007, with a new regulation, a new era in MotoGP will begin. Thus Hayden and Melandri will be the ones in charge to develop the machine of 2006 and Pedrosa will work in the one of 2007''.
Hayden and Melandri currently sit in joint second place in the riders standing's this season with two races remaining.
So, gone are the days of Gibernau, Biaggi and Barros - the elder statesmen - getting the ''good oil'' at HRC, and in come the brat pack, ready to take the Honda charge to Rossi.
Hard work then for Hayden and Melandri starting with post-season testing, and will we see the pair (or Hayden at least) on the evo-bike - road tested in Japan and briefly at Brno - at the Valencia Grand Prix?
A winter test has, apparently, been pencilled in for the week following that final Grand Prix at Valencia; Hayden and Melandri on the evo-bike with Pedrosa on a 2005 season ending V5.
Stay tuned as HRC try and solve the Rossi conundrum and stick one over the Italian and Yamaha with young talent.
Can the sun really rise again over HRC headquarters in 2006?

From One V To Another: Chris The V On RC211 The V
by stephen scharf
Monday, October 17, 2005
Editor's note: Soup's Stephen Scharf hung around Chris Vermulen for a day at Phillip Island to get an idea as to how Chris the V's first day on a MotoGP bike went. He filed this story.
Chris Vermeulen is riding this weekend at the Polini Australian Grand Prix at Philip Island for the Camel Honda team, standing in for an inured Troy Bayliss.
Vermeulen describes what it was like coming to grips with a MotoGP bike for the first time. The following is a transcript of an interview with Vermeulen conducted by a number of the MotoGP press after his first practice sessions.
Chris Vermeulen, after the first morning practice:
''That felt strange, I'll tell you that much!''
''It wasn't the handling characteristics of the Camel Honda so much, but just the power delivery that took a bit of getting used to. But the main thing was that I felt comfortable on the bike, which was the major aim of the session. Besides changing the gear lever around, I didn't really play around with this bike too much. And the carbon brakes felt good, too. I am enjoying this MotoGP caper already, and I can't wait for Sunday to come around.''
After the afternoon session, Chris had more expound on the bike:
''I'll be happy as long as we can improve every session. I'm just learning a lot and having a lot of fun. You can do a lot more with this bike (than the Superbike). It's an easy bike to ride, but I have a feeling it may be hard to go fast on.''
Vermeulen commented on the differences compared to his Ten Kate Honda CBR1000RR World Superbike:
''The delivery on the RC211V is very different, and I found on the straight it just keeps going. The superbike is probably a lot more aggressive in the lower gears. We have the same horsepower all the way; there's no engine management system. But these things have more power and put it out a better way. The power comes in earlier, and you've got another 3,000 rpm to deal with. The RC211V is a lot more rigid, but it's also a lot more nervous when the wind get a hold of it down the front straight. You carry a lot more corner speed on the MotoGP machine.''
Chris also described what it was like to ride with carbon brakes for the first time:
''They are strange! The first time I went into Honda (turn four) there was nothing, and I thought I wa going to go straight ahead. But gradually they got better.''
Vermeulen described that riding the MotoGP bike wasn't all that easy: ''I'm trying quite hard out there, but I'm trying to be smooth as well and take a lot in. We improved one second from the morning session, so if that keeps up, we'll soon be the quickest; I don't expect that to happen, though. I hope I can improve all the time. Vermeuelen elaborated on where he needs the improvement, ''Mainly in braking and corner entry points. That's probably where I was losing out the most.''
Regarding his qualifying position, Vermeulen was positive and upbeat:
''It's never where I want to be because I'm a racer and want to do better. But I think we did reasonably well for a first day. We've been learning a lot about the bike and making it better for tomorrow. I used pretty base settings on the Honda and standard tires from Michelin. It's been good, but the main difference has been with the front—it's very rigid and hard to get feeling out of. The back tire is much easier to get feel and control—we are a making progress with them.
Vermeulen improved his lap times considerably on Saturday. ''It's fantastic to ride with this team and this bike. We made improvements in every session starting out at 1:34 and ending up at 1:31. I think it is a good margin in four hours and I'm delighted with it. We're working well together and I am also getting on with the Michelin engineers. The qualifying tires offer incredible grip and even though I didn't make the most of them I still enjoyed myself using them. So tomorrow I hope to be able to improve my times even further and lap at a constant rhythm. My aim is to finish in the points and as close to another Honda rider as possible.'' Vermeulen qualified 14th, the same classification as Friday's practice sessions, but he was able to lap at almost two seconds faster. His final qualifying time was a 1:31.654.
For this special event, Chris had his family here with him, including his parents. They are renting a house in Cowes, the biggest town on the island, and the whole family is here except for a couple of sisters. Philip Island is a favorite circuit with all regular MotoGP riders and Vermeulen is no exception in his fondness for the track. Vermeulen said his favorite corners are the ultrafast Turn one and the quasi-Corkscrew -like Lukey Heights.

The Empire Strikes Back: Honda Looks To 2006
2006 possibly HRC's last chance to beat Rossi. So who's going to develop the bike?
by dean adams
Friday, October 21, 2005
Even now, months away from the new year, it's becoming quite clear that 2006 will be a pivotal year in MotoGP racing. Especially for Honda.
While it is far from certain as to whether Yamaha's Valentino Rossi will abandon motorcycle racing for some four-wheeled pursuit in 2007, if he does leave bikes for cars after next year, that leaves just one last opportunity to beat their former favored son in MotoGP. If they don't, and Rossi never races bikes again, the fact that HRC was unable to defeat Rossi for the championship will be etched in racing stone forever.
Thus, 2006 is very important for Honda.
Which brings the subject of Honda's development for the 2006 MotoGP season. HRC will use an updated version of the former Grand Prix dominator, the RC211V, in 2006 but which riders will get to do late 2005 season and pre-season 2006 development on the machine are matters of speculation and conjecture. Outwardly there would seem to be a fork in the road in terms of HRC riders who could possibly lead the charge. The camps would seemingly be split between the young and the old: twenty-somethings Nick Hayden and Marco Melandri on one side of the pre-season testing garage, and Max Biaggi and other veteran HRC riders on the other (Sete Gibernau is heavily rumored to be joining Ducati's MotoGP team in '05, leaving Honda behind). Previously, veteran riders did the brunt of the development on Honda's MotoGP machines, but the inability of HRC to beat Rossi and Yamaha speaks louder than any words, and when coupled with the late season charges of the spry Hayden and Melandri, makes the racing fan wonder if it isn't time for HRC to let the old guard stay at home when the testing of the '06 RC211V by MotoGP teams begins in earnest.
Does any of this have any real impact? Yes, no, maybe. Only a fool would suggest that Nick Hayden is completely comfortable—or has ever been completely comfortable—on the Honda MotoGP bike; you can see at times from his race posture that he's not crazy about the front end of that motorcycle. Hence, getting a crack at developing the new bike to his tastes would be most welcome. Meanwhile, Marco Melandri has had little if any development time on the Honda, yet he's gone straight to the front on it. At the Laguna Seca USGP last July, former World Superbike champion and current Camel Honda MotoGP rider Troy Bayliss said he found the Honda GP bike quite confounding, that the set-up area where he seemed comfortable on the machine was razor thin, and indicated that the moment the rider tried to over-ride the bike to go fast, you'd actually go slower.
While it is difficult to discern whether this indicates a trend, HRC-sources today denied the recent news that Nicky Hayden and Marco Melandri would lead the charge in development of the '06 RC211V. This doesn't necessarily mean that HRC intends to stick with the status quo for their development plan, just that they deny that a youth movement is on. (In fact, Tsutomu Ishii—General Manager of HRC—denies he made any statements regarding who will test the '06 RC211V).
Certainly one issue that even HRC would not deny is that the stakes—for Honda—in 2006 MotoGP racing are almost biblical; the results will be referenced for a half-century. Was mighty Honda able to beat the boy-genius of MotoGP racing, or will it go down in history that after Rossi left for their arch-rival Yamaha they were unable to win a single MotoGP championship?

Vermeulen Replaces Roberts?
by dean adams
Saturday, October 22, 2005
Judging by the press release issued today at Istanbul, Suzuki's MotoGP team is not interested in an older rider to fill the spot of ex-Suzuki man Kenny Roberts Junior. The release announcing Roberts not being re-hired mentions Suzuki is planning for the 2007 season and wants a rider to groom with that in mind.
Roberts Junior is 32 years old.
So, who will Suzuki get to replace Roberts? Reportedly, Honda World Superbike star Chris Vermeulen--currently enjoying a two race run in MotoGP replacing the injured Troy Bayliss--is at the top of the list.
Earlier in the week it was reported that HRC had told Chris the V that he would have to race World Superbike for another season before moving to MotoGP in 2007. Vermeulen could not have been pleased to hear that, as he has been pushing for a MotoGP try-out and ride for the better part of eighteen months.
It sounds as if Suzuki is ready to give the V the ride he desires for 2006. Stay tuned.

Marco Melandri, MoviStar Honda: 1st: ''It was an incredible day to cap a great weekend. I can't describe my happiness. I have not won since Valencia in 2002, and since then I've had a difficult couple of years due to injury and misfortune. This win in the MotoGP class feels different to winning in the 250s. I liked this track from the first moment I tried it and the team did a great job. After dominating the free sessions I knew I could have a good race, but it's not always that easy. I got away well and even though Sete got past me I was happy to wait as we were opening up a gap on the rest. Then Sete made a mistake and I found myself on my own at the front and I just concentrated on maintaining my rhythm. I want to enjoy this moment and thank Fausto for the confidence he has shown in me, Fabrizio Cecchini, my chief mechanic and everyone at Honda and Michelin.''
Nicky Hayden, Repsol Honda: 3rd: ''That's the first time in MotoGP I've had three consecutive podiums so that's definitely a step forward but to be honest I haven't really had the pace all weekend. In the race I came through much faster than we'd managed during the practice days and for that I'm happy. The team did a great job and they definitely made a difference. I'm disappointed for the points situation. With Marco having such a great ride - congratulations to him, he definitely deserves it - we now have a little gap to second place. I want to dedicate this podium to a very special friend of mine back home. We all recently found out he's been taken ill and wish him all our best. He's had a huge influence in my career I wouldn't be where I am today without him. Our thoughts are with him.''
Sete Gibernau, MoviStar Honda: 4th: ): ''Once again it has been demonstrated that this is not my year and it's a shame because the team did a great job this weekend and we had a great chance totake our first win. We have wasted another chance but race after race things have not gone my way. I went off after a mistake; I went into a corner to quickly and tried to brake but couldn't. It cost us dear again.''
Makoto Tamada, Konica Minolta Honda: 8th: ''Even if I started well, in the first few laps I lost too many positions. I didn't feel the right grip to push more, but after some laps the tires has reached the ideal temperature and this allowed me to recover a lot thanks to a good race rhythm. The eight position doesn't make me happy. I want to end the season with a good performance in Valencia and give some satisfaction to the Konica Minolta Honda Team.''
Alex Barros, Camel Honda: 9th: ''I don't have too much to say other than the fact that I'm disappointed with this race. I'm still in pain from the crash in Australia but not enough to not be able to do better than ninth. In any case, I will try to get a good result in the last race in Valencia.''
Chris Vermeulen, substitute rider for Troy Bayliss at Camel Honda: 11th: ''We can say that I managed to complete one of my objectives, which was to finish ahead of another Honda, but it's not enough though. I would have had to do much better to be satisfied. As I ride this bike more I realise how many things I still have to learn and that this is building up some great experience for me. Today I got away better than in Phillip Island and I battled with several riders for a few laps. I also committed a few mistakes and one of these allowed Tamada and Nakano to pass me. For a few laps I lost my rhythm a bit, and only in the last part of the race did I feel much better again. I closed in on Nakano but not enough to get past him. As I said, it's all experience which will help me improve, whether it's in setting up the bike or in racing, especially if I get the chance to ride again in Valencia.''
Max Baggi, Repsol Honda: 12th: ''I never felt comfortable on the bike around here at any point of the weekend. My team tried so many things but nothing seemed to work. I rode as hard as I could on the package we had today and in the end it was only good enough for 12th place. To be in this position hurts me so much. My spirit is gone here and I can only hope we have some small piece of sunlight in Valencia to end this season that I want to forget on some sort of a reasonable note.''
Valentino Rossi (2nd +1.513) ''On Friday and Saturday we struggled to find a good setting for the bike; yesterday morning I felt like I wanted to go home! It wasn't until qualifying practice yesterday afternoon that we began to understand what the problem was. We made some more steps forward in the warm-up this morning and went in a slightly different direction with the setting, which in the end wasn't so bad. Unfortunately I made a big mistake at the start and conceded a couple of seconds to the leader, which proved to be a big gap to make up. Melandri was very fast throughout the race and in certain points of the track I knew he was faster than me, so it would have been very hard to pass him. Anyway, I am satisfied with second place - it is a good result for us after all the troubles we've had this weekend and I'm really pleased with the way the team worked to overcome a difficult situation.''
Colin Edwards (7th +29.255) ''I struggled today. I've been trying a new riding style this weekend which has really helped me find some more pace from the bike, but my instinct took over at the start of the race and I just went back to my old superbike style, trying to squeeze everything out of the bike. Once I had calmed down and focused on the new style I managed to get it together and I actually set my fastest lap of the race on lap 20, which tells its own story. I hate to say that this Grand Prix has been like a test but we have to look to improving our performances next season and I firmly believe we have contributed to that here, even though the race result was not what we were after.''...egy fecske nem csinál nyarat, viszont egy hülye százat csinál...

Toseland Signs With Ten Kate Honda
will race honda superbike in 2006
by staff
Tuesday, October 25, 2005
Former World Superbike champion James Toseland signed with Team Ten Kate Honda last Saturday and will race a CBR1000RR Superbike in 2006 World Superbike. Toseland found himself ride-less recently after a shuffle of rides at the factory Ducati World Superbike team but seems to have rebounded nicely with a ride on one of the fastest Honda teams in the Superbike world.
Does this development mean that Chris Vermeulen will race Moto Grand Prix in 2006, as has been rumored since he began his stand-in duty for Troy Bayliss? It seems as if Vermeulen (now) has offers from both Honda and Suzuki for '06....egy fecske nem csinál nyarat, viszont egy hülye százat csinál...

Ryder Notes: Youngbloods
by julian ryder, in turkey
Monday, October 24, 2005
The main topic of conversation in the Istanbul Park paddock was the future of Chris Vermeulen: would he announce he's signed with Suzuki, would he keep quiet until after another ride on the Honda at Valencia, or would Honda find a way to lever him into a team for 2006? Chris did nothing wrong all weekend. He achieved his ambition of not being the last Honda home and he impressed everybody—and that no doubt includes HRC who might be reconsidering their decision to ask him to go back to World Superbikes next season.
The other bloke who did nothing wrong was Marco Melandri. He took the win he's been threatening for a while, and the outcome was never in doubt once Sete Gibernau had run off the track half way round the sixth lap—while leading: Shades of Qatar.
Marco didn't have a lot to say after the race, mainly because he'd spent most of the cool-down lap screaming inside his helmet and had frazzled his vocal cords. Other people were only too happy to point out that Marco is just 23 years old (his birthday was six weeks ago) and that Hayden, standing on the rostrum for the third time in a row for the first time in his MotoGP career, is 24. Chris Vermeulen is 23.
The other youngster who impressed more than a little was Toni Elias. He started off the second row for the first time in his career, was running sixth when he lost eight seconds and three places with one off-track excursion and then fought back to sixth place, taking Colin Edwards on the run to the flag. Toni ran off track at the same place as Gibernau and said afterwards he was glad he did because it made the race so much more fun!
Nicky might have had a chance of taking second off Rossi, but he came across a backmarker in the left/right/left chicane that ends the lap and lost touch. He dedicated his podium to a 'special friend' who has recently been taken ill.
Nicky is now third in the championship nine points adrift of Marco Melandri, but second place is still there to fight for at Valencia.
Quite what this outbreak of youthful enthusiasm will do for the careers of such old stagers as Max Biaggi, Alex Barros, Carlos Checa and Sete Gibernau remains to be seen.

This just in from Suzuki:
Chris Vermeulen signs for Team SUZUKI MotoGP
Suzuki and Chris Vermeulen have agreed terms for the next two years, which will see the rising Australian star race the Suzuki GSV-R in the 2006 and 2007 seasons.
Vermeulen joins Team SUZUKI MotoGP from a successful season in the World Superbike Championship riding for Ten Kate Honda, the 23-year old finishing the season in second place overall. He will ride the Suzuki GSV-R for the first time in the forthcoming Valencia test on Wednesday 9th and Thursday 10th November.
Born in Brisbane in Australia, Vermeulen began racing dirt track bikes from the age of 12, before moving onto 250 and 600cc machines in the Australian Championship. In 2000 his talent was noticed by former Suzuki World Champion Barry Sheene, and the late Sheene persuaded Vermeulen to travel to Britain to race. A year in the British Supersport and Superstock championships followed and Vermeulen scored his first Supersport win at Donington Park, accompanied by five wins in the Superstock championship.
For the 2001 season Vermeulen moved onto the world stage with a ride in World Supersport and in 2003 raced to the title in only his third season in this very competitive championship. Vermeulen then made the progression into Superbikes in 2004, developing his machine into a serious contender and notching up four victories.
Vermeulen has already shown, at a young age, his talent to develop a racing motorcycle and his hunger for victory. It is these attributes, coupled with his natural racing talent, which have persuaded Suzuki to offer him the position recently vacated by ex World Champion Kenny Roberts Jr as team-mate to John Hopkins.
Chris Vermeulen:
''I'm so excited about the prospects for next year. It's obviously going to be a difficult season to begin with - there are a lot of new tracks to learn, a new bike and a new team, but I know I am up for the challenge.
''I've known Paul Denning since I came to England in the year 2000 and I'm really looking forward to working with him as well as the whole team. I'll try to take that step up to fill the shoes of Suzuki World Champions like Barry Sheene - Barry was the guy that gave me my first chance - Kevin Schwantz and Kenny Junior. These are all guys that I really respect
''I'm also looking forward to working with Bridgestone as well as Suzuki. It's another new tyre manufacturer for me. I've never ridden on them before, but I've heard and seen a lot of good things and hopefully we can do well together.
''I want to thank Suzuki for giving me this chance in MotoGP and for trusting in my ability. Suzuki has been very honest about the current position, and about its future plans. I am very happy to be part of those plans and I'll be doing everything I can to make sure Suzuki's faith in me is repaid.''
Paul Denning - Team Manager:
''Suzuki is delighted to have secured the services of Chris. He is one of the rising stars of motorcycle racing and will undoubtedly inject some new life into Team SUZUKI MotoGP. He has already shown his hunger for success and his ability to learn new situations very quickly.
''He is joining the team after a very successful year in World Superbikes where he pushed the eventual World Champion - Suzuki's Troy Corser - all the way. Neither Chris nor Suzuki is under any illusions at the size of our MotoGP task ahead, but we are all confident that Chris is the right choice for the future. We are very grateful to the Ten Kate team for releasing Chris early from his contract, this will enable him to get to know his new crew and ride the GSV-R at Valencia.
''It has been helpful that Chris had the opportunity to ride in MotoGP at the end of this season, but Suzuki's enthusiasm to sign him was established well before this chance came up. His mature performances in these races have only served to justify that enthusiasm!
''On a personal basis, I first met Chris as a fresh-faced 17-year old when he came over to England with Barry Sheene. He quickly established himself as a tough competitor on the track, but a very likeable young man off it. I have watched his career progress and know that now is the right time for him to make the switch to MotoGP and show the true talent and potential that he possesses.
''Suzuki's rider line-up of John and Chris is young, aggressive, exciting and shows faith in the future. We all have a lot of work to do - now let's get to it!''

na kérem, ha ez igaz.....
''In a sensational leak by a representative of the Yamaha Motor Corporation, who stated that following the decision by Gauloises to pull all backing from the Yamaha factory Moto GP team and Yamaha’s supposed refusal to carry sponsorship from McDonalds as they did not feel that the image that would be portrayed by McDonalds ‘Ronald McDonald’ clown caricature was suited to the very serious business of motorcycle racing, Valentino Rossi has unbelievably quit the Yamaha factory team allegedly stating only that he would not be dictated to having virtually single handedly secured the millions in sponsorship that was required for Yamaha to successfully contest the 2006 Championship. No further comment is available at this time from either Yamaha or Rossi.''...egy fecske nem csinál nyarat, viszont egy hülye százat csinál...
