One thing is completely certain after the first day of real competition in MotoGP 2007: we are dealing with a completely different type of motorbike.

Even without the aid of a stopwatch it is blindingly obvious that corner entry speeds are way up and in the critical fifth-gear left-hand sweeper before the triple right, lean angles are now up to 60 degrees according to on-board telemetry. Last year the 990s were over at a mere 58 degrees. And we haven't seen a qualifier used in anger yet.

It's equally certain that the Yamaha team of Rossi and Edwards - the newly christened Fiat Yamaha squad - have prepared better than the rest. Rossi says the Jerez test was critical. Up 'till then Edwards had always been faster but a geometry fix that took some weight off the front put Vale back at the top of the pile. He's still there. He relaxed, he's confident and the number 46 on the back of his leathers is made from long-haired rabbit fur...

Rossi revealed that his 17 rear tires selected before the race started under the new regulations, included two qualifiers and four different types of race tire. He already knows what he's going to use on Saturday and will use tomorrow morning's free practice to test on one of the other tires. Like everyone, he considers that the new regulation has simplified things and put the emphasis back on the rider. ''Before, there was a new tire for every problem, now the rider has to make the difference.'

Defending Champ Nicky Hayden didn't have good day. Despite being a second faster in the afternoon session he was down in sixteenth place. 'I can't sugar coat it,' he said before admitting that he was still looking for solutions to the front end problems he's had since he first got on the new bike. Remember that he crashed twice here while testing and is anxious not to repeat the experience.

Rossi has an opinion: 'Nicky? The number-one plate is heavy on the cowling... I always use number 46! Seriously, it is the change of bike. At the moment Hayden doesn't use very well the 800. Maybe it is his background in Superbike, not in 125 and 250 like Melandri and the others. He needs more time but he will arrive, he is a good rider.'

Nicky finished a fighting second in Qatar last year. This time round it isn't looking good but he beat the odds a few times last year. We'll know more after tomorrow's qualifying.
