Is It Time For Rossi To Re-Tire?
mono tire on the motogp horizon?

Lets be frank: Valentino Rossi is MotoGP racing.

He's not just the most popular rider in Europe, but in the world and he pulls in thousands of race watchers at the track and millions of fans who catch MotoGP on TV. there is a lively paddock discussion at nearly every GP where pundits wonder exactly what will be left of MotoGP when Rossi stops racing.

Thus, having Rossi off the podium and racing for position in the back half of the top ten—or worse—can only be viewed as counter-productive by the powers that be in MotoGP.

Rossi himself expertly rattled his sabers after the last race where he criticized the new MotoGP tire rule, saying that if the series is going to be like this—that the tires are going to decide who wins—then he prefers to do something else.

Rossi mulling over other activities rather than racing MotoGP is enough to flick the switch for a five alarm fire at Dorna headquarters. Rossi has plenty of other opportunities and interests, if not F1 then certainly Rally Car and no one in power wants to see him leave one day sooner than he absolutely has to.

When a racing superstar like Rossi speaks emphatically usually the world follows his thinking without question. But, from a reality standpoint, it's possibly important to note that what took Rossi out of the race at Brno, and made him conclude that his chances at the '07 title are vanquished, were not his Michelin tires. The engine in his Yamaha MotoGP bike hatched, which pounded the final nail in his championship coffin.

Certainly Rossi's Michelin tires were a large part of why he isn't challenging for the title in 2007. Michelin today is a shell of its former GP and MotoGP dominating self, looking like a confused old man trying to run a foot race with a teenager. GP crewchief Erv Kanemoto once told me that what separates the best riders from the merely very good is simply a matter of desire—the very good want to win more than they want anything. Does Michelin still have the desire to win beyond issuing press releases stating how successful they once were? They appear to be a company just going through the motions.

If they weren't tied to Rossi, one can assume that Dorna would allow Michelin to slowly implode and be blown away, but because Rossi rides on Michelin tires—and there seems to be little hope of Bridgestone supplying Rossi with tires—you can bet that Dorna are going to move quickly to amend the current tire rules. Or, to name a series spec tire rule.

Yes, a mono-tire paddock in MotoGP is quite possible.

Firstly, if that's true, then Bridgestone has done what some felt was impossible: they have effectively buried the most dominant GP tire manufacturer of the modern era—in one season!

Yamaha seems to be continuing to side with Michelin, now and in the future. But the real question is this: will Michelin even be in the MotoGP paddock next season?
