Ryder Notes: Sunday, Sunday, Sunday ...
by julian ryder, on the ground in china
Sunday, May 06, 2007
As predicted by just about everybody, Casey Stoner won the Chinese GP with
another display of Ducati top-end power on the three-quarter mile straight, but he was made to work hard for his third win in four races this year. Valentino Rossi and John Hopkins both rode superb races to keep the Aussie honest. Sure Casey never failed to retake on the straight what he lost ion the tricky first half of the lap but he too rode a great race at a pace that surprised all three of the rostrum men: no one thought they could run in the low two-minute flat bracket all race but that's what they did. Rossi could have sat back behind Stoned and accepted second place as the young Aussie ran yet another near-perfect race but instead he wanted 'to push, to play, to fight with him.'
He did all three but never forced Stoner into an error of any significance, indeed it was Rossi who finally made a mistake, getting out of shape over a bump at the end of the straight and running wide. That let John Hopkins through to second for a couple of laps. The Suzuki rider had forced past the Hondas of Melandri and Pedrosa on the brakes in the early laps because he knew Stoner and Rossi were 'my ticket to a breakaway.' He was right. The front three pulled away, Rossi continually harrying and attacking the Ducati, Hopkins closing in.
All three had reason to be thankful they qualified well because there was another first-lap pile-up. This time it came at Turn One's second apex and was precipitated by Toni Elias's highly optimistic lunge from twelfth on the grid. He crashed, punted Alex Barros and sent Nicky Hayden on a wild ride across the grass. Fortunately, Nicky found a bit of tarmac to brake on just as it looked as if he might career back across the track in the path of the pack. Nicky was hit hard enough to dent his swingingarm and rip his rear fender. He then had a lonely and frustrated ride for just four points. When he was informed that Elias was saying he braked too early, Nicky came very close to forgetting his good manners but restrained himself from commenting. I told him what Barros had said: 'Toni come very crazy,' which sums it up nicely. As has now become customary, Casey Stoner said he wasn't riding at the limit and had 'lots left' on the last six laps - the ones after Rossi had made his mistake. Rossi was happy with his bike, happy with his Michelins and happy that he had found ?the best way to lose.' Twenty points from this track, he surmised, was not a bad return. The only thing he kept referring to was the problem he's had in Turkey. The man who probably had reason to be happiest was John Hopkins, who finally got on the rostrum after so many fourth places and crashing while trying too hard. The Suzuki is coming good, as are its Bridgestone tyres, and Hopper put together a superb weekend. He was fast from the very first session, was mentioned after qualifying by Rossi as one of the two men he feared on Sunday, and rode an aggressive but controlled race. It was obviously an a emotional moment for John - he dedicated the result ot his late father: 'This one goes out to my dad, he was watching us.'
After which I felt suitably guilty for being rude during my TV commentary about his fashionable eyewear--he has a new contract with super-hip Italian shades company Spy. John gave me the pair he wore on the rostrum and they can be yours for a suitably generous donation to Riders for Health (details to follow).

Ten Kate To MotoGP in '08?
dutch team at a philosophical crossroads
by dean adams
Tuesday, May 15, 2007
Much has been made of Ron ten Kate's visit to a MotoGP event earlier this year. Brave pundits predict that ten Kate will have a team in the MotoGP championship in 2008--with James Toseland as their rider.
Toseland may be in MotoGP next year. The series desperately needs a British rider and let's face it, Toseland is riding better this year than quite a few current MotoGP pilots.
But ten Kate in MotoGP? Doubtful.
Brothers Garret and Ronald ten Kate, who run the ten Kate Honda effort, are hard-working, pragmatic and cautious people. This is evidenced by what the Dutch team has accomplished in World Superbike racing.
They were once a scrappy, bare-bones Supersport team, fully entrenched in the glorified club racing atmosphere where good weekends are when the entire crew bails into a single hotel room where they enjoy hot showers. Normal races are when you wake up with the smell of cold steel in your nose because the floor of the van is under your face.
From these primitive beginnings, the gigantic ten Kate effort was born. Looking out in the paddock here at Monza, ten Kate have one of the largest hospitality units in a small sea of hospitality units. Their riders are currently leading both the Supersport and Superbike championship standings.
I think the ten Kate fellows are astute enough to recognize potential financial suicide when they see it. And without a huge sponsor to fund a MotoGP effort, any team puts itself in harm's way when costs increase dramatically without any kind of return.
Ron ten Kate spoke at length with Soup reporter Glenn Le Santo at Donington Park about a potential move to MotoGP.
''Looking at MotoGP, it seems the team are finding it difficult to fund their efforts in MotoGP. They now have to do workshops in MotoGP to see new ways to raise money. The costs in MotoGP have gone up so much because they have tried to transform motorcycle racing into F1 racing. The sponsors are not coming,'' ten Kate said.
''Things are not in balanced in MotoGP,'' ten Kate said, inferring that the money teams can acquire in sponsorship are not in line with the costs of running a team. ''Here in WSBK there is a fine balance for the sponsors. The exposure they get is in line with what they spend.''
''We have four riders in the Superbike and Supersport championships, a big crew and good equipment,'' ten Kate continued, ''and our budget is about half what a MotoGP would need.''
Ten Kate does have a sponsor seemingly ready to fund a MotoGP effort--Hannspree screens.
However, the ten Kate men must know that a change to MotoGP would probably mean a loss of control in their effort. It's an assurance that when teams change from a production championship to one where your bikes come in crates from the manufacturer that giant areas of personal tuning credo will disappear. Are ten Kate willing to give that up?
The ten Kate philosophy on racing would make any mom and pop effort proud. Whatever they obtain in racing sponsorship money goes directly into the team--they take nothing out of the team in terms of income. Their dealership and line of aftermarket product provide them with income.
''If money comes in to the team, then we spend it on the team. We buy more equipment, hire more people or do more testing. We forbid ourselves long ago not to make any money from racing and in the early days it was easy to stick to that,'' ten Kate said with a laugh. ''But now we are the same. Everything we make from racing goes to the team.''
Does MotoGP fit into the ten Kate way of racing? We shall see.

1200cc Twins Soon To Be Legal In WSBK?
by dean adams
Wednesday, May 16, 2007
Informed sources say that it is likely that the Ducati 1098 in 1200cc form will be legal for World Superbike next year. Negotiations between the manufacturers and the series continue and there's really no telling what sort of language the rules will include, but several sources with knowledge of the situation say they won't be surprised if the 1200cc Twins will carry extra weight and have other performance limiting rules in place when the 1098 hits the WSBK grid.

Ryder Notes: Survival
by julian ryder, on the ground at le mans
Sunday, May 20, 2007
On the weekend that Jack Findlay, Suzuki's first premier-class winner died, another Aussie scored the company's first MotoGP win. Chris Vermeulen said he made some mistakes today but he was the only one who noticed them. His team gave him the perfect wet weather set up and when the field came in to change bikes he rode perfectly, held off a challenge from Marco Melandri and took his first win in the top class. It was Suzuki's first Grand Prix win since Sete Gibernau's victory at Valencia in 2001.
Le Mans weather is always unpredictable and this time heavy rain arrived ten minutes into the race. Everyone except Roberts (he went for the ''Lawson Gamble'') started on slicks and some were more willing than others to take risks: Frenchmen Guintoli and De Puniet both led, to the delight of the crowd, until both crashed. Rossi had a hard job missing the Dunlop Yamaha rider.
That was the hint for the field to start heading for pitlane to change bikes. This has only happened once before, in Australia last year. Thankfully the Le Mans pitlane is much wider and longer than the Aussie track's and everyone got in and out without incident. It was then a matter of survival. Those who had taken tyres that could cope with the conditions getting really wet—Melandri, Vermeulen—could go for the win, those that had gone for a safe, hard compound that would last the distance whatever happened just had to survive— Stoner, Rossi.
Pole man Colin Edwards had no grip from the start and never figured, Nicky Hayden was looking better than at any point in the season, passed Pedrosa and Rossi then lost it braking from flat out in fifth and took a bang to the ribs. He's been X-rayed, thankfully nothing is broken.
So Casey Stoner, despite never being in the hunt for the win, got on the rostrum and extended his championship lead. Next stop Mugello!

Ryder Notes: Unknown
Saturday, June 02, 2007
Weather conditions changed completely about three times in qualifying. It started wet, almost dried up, then rained again and finally tried to dry up again. At the end of the hour one half of the circuit was bathed in sunshine, the other had a dark cloud dumping lots of water on it. Not ideal...
Nevertheless, any ideas anyone was harboring about Casey Stoner and Ducati's vulnerability in the wet were shot down in Le Mans two weeks ago and buried today. Stoner went to pole during the driest part of the session and at the very end put in three more laps that were quicker than anyone else managed. Significantly, Rossi was out at the same time pushing hard. He too ended the session with a run of personal best lap times but ended up third. Wet-weather wizard Chris Vermeulen is the man in the middle of the front row.
The two Aussies both owned up to a bit of luck with the timing of their first run of quick laps, and they were sat in the pits wondering when to go out on inters or cut slicks when the rains came again. Nicky Hayden actually managed to improve his time after the rains came again but ran off track when well up on the split times. Nicky admitted that he has problems when a wet track starts to clear--'I don't like that dry line stuff, it's always been a weak spot for me'. He must be feeling bad, he was actually heard to swear at the start of his post-qualifying press briefing...
So all the questions tonight center on the weather. So far we've had dry morning sessions and deluges during the afternoon. If you look at this morning's session, Pedrosa was fastest just as he was on Friday but he didn't string that many fast laps together. The men who look to have a good race set- up are - how did you guess? - Stoner and Rossi. However, this being Italy, the next two fastest men, Capirossi and Melandri, cannot be discounted.
At the other end of the timing sheets, the two Team KR bikes of Kenny and Kurtis Roberts are in for a difficult Sunday. The team only has two bikes, one for each of the brothers, so a lot of time was lost in the pit garage. Their problems really start tomorrow, they haven't got spare bikes for the riders to change to if it's a white-flag race. Team KR has either to pray conditions don't change and send both brothers out or bench Kurtis and prepare one wet bike and one dry bike for Kenny: a decision that casts Kenny Senior as Solomon. He'll deliver his judgment tomorrow morning.
