Ryder Notes: All Things Must Pass
by julian ryder
Monday, June 01, 2009Hmmm, Rossi beaten by Lorenzo--again. This is not in the script--especially at Mugello. I know Casey Stoner won the race, Ducati's first victory at the Italian GP, but it may well be that the rise of Jorge is the most significant thing about this weekend.
Consider this. His Sunday started pretty badly with an uncomfortable wet warm-up. He then crashed on his sighting lap. This is about as embarrassing as it gets, with added stress thanks to the inevitability of a bike swap in the race as conditions dried out. If the crashed bike was badly damaged, his race was already lost. Then he had the worst start possible. It looked like launch control wasn't engaged, so the bike snaked madly off the line and when the TV director switched to Jorge's rearwards facing camera you could see smoke coming off the Bridgestone.
Most racers I can think of would have settled for a reassuring ride to few useful points. Not Jorge. His biography, written with a top Spanish broadcaster and brilliantly translated by the BBC's pit-lane reporter Mat Roberts, has just been published in English. It provides a fascinating insight into a complex young man. Normally I'd say that someone who's just 21 years old shouldn't bring out a biography, in Jorge's case I'll make an exception.
The other feel good story of the weekend was Niccolo Canepa, Ducati's ex-test rider now with the Pramac team. He got his first top-ten finish and looked good all weekend. Someone pointed out that Nicollo must have worn a groove in the Mugello tarmac when he was testing. He responded that last time he was at Mugello he left with two broken ankles and a broken wrist. Tricky job, testing these new electronics systems.
A lot of people still don't believe they saw Capirossi pass Stoner in a straight line, but TV replays confirm it did happen. For a Suzuki to pass anything in a straight line is a rare event, but a Ducati...? Turns out Casey was spinning the rear tyre all the way down the straight. He made a swift clutch adjustment and next time round, in the words of one Suzuki team man, 'passed Loris like he'd parked it.'
In the smaller classes Simoncelli and Pasini indulged in one of the greatest last-lap brawls you'll ever see. Post-race Simoncelli got a suspended ban for his move on Alvaro Bautista that sent them both across the grass and gravel and Casaova Savelli. That's the corner that Rossi was describing when the photo for last year's crash helmet design was taken. It's fast and scary. The general feeling is that the judgement is a bit harsh, but then again Race Direction may have been taking a few previous offenses into account. Either way, last year Bautista was moved to remark that 'Simoncelli's ambition outweighs his ability.' Although the elegance of the phrase may again owe something to Mat Roberts' translation. Hopefully American fans will get to see them skirmish at Indy this year, they are liable to be the next 250 guys drafted into MotoGP and are starting to have a healthy dislike of one another.
The FIM announced the Moto2 class is heavily over subscribed, with only one of the 47 teams who have applied intending to run 250 two-strokes. The selection committee - IRTA, Dorna, the FIM - will meet at Barcelona in two weeks to produce a provisional entry list.
British moment: congratulations to Bradley Smith, pole position, the win and a lap record in the 125 race. If you get the full set like that at Mugello, you haven't got anything left to prove. Watch him go on a Moto2 next year.

Ryder Notes: What A Race
by julian ryder
Sunday, June 14, 2009"That," said Kevin Schwantz, "was about more than five points." It most assuredly was. Valentino Rossi and Casey Stoner put in one of the greatest last laps of GP history after a race in which they were never more than a few bike lengths apart (the biggest gap at the line was 0.474sec) and which came down to an audacious pass between the two, downhill high-speed rights which end a lap of the Circuit de Catalunya.
Rossi was, as usual, best on the brakes at the end of the main straight and devilishly quick through the right/left flick that follows. Jorge knew he had to get past on the straight then ride defensive lines. After a closing three laps which featured pass and counter attack Valentino applied the coup de grace when, as Jorge admitted, 'I see the victory and I didn't close [the door].'
'I am used to winning battles, in the easiest corner to maintain the first place, he overtake me.'
Lorenzo actually did a good job of hiding his emotions, he smiled, waved to the crowd and told the TV audience that Rossi is a brave rider. He then added 'with more experience than me.'
Valentino took the complement then pointed out that to put a motorcycle with worn tyres through that gap without touching Lorenzo, staying on line, and getting it turned was also about - he searched for the right word -'technique.'
However, his reactions after the flag, screaming inside his helmet, chopping the air with his hands, climbing the pit wall out of parc ferme to bow to the near-hysterical grandtstand, betrayed his emotions. He hadn't felt like this since Mugello '06, he said. 'It is like putting the fingers in a 360-volt socket.'
The fight for the win was so intense it was easy to overlook a brave ride to third by Casey Stoner. He all but collapsed in parc ferme and looked very wobbly on the rostrum. He'd been sick in the morning, felt after warm-up as if he'd done a while race, and by half-distance 'I was dead.' He used his last reserves to fight off Dovizioso over the final two laps.
Andrea was pretty happy, too. As was Loris Capirossi in fifth. Suzuki were using either a new engine (rumour mill) or ?an upgrade' (the team's preferred term). Either way Loris is very pleased and believes he could have been on the rostrum at Mugello if he'd had the motor there.
Next up was Dani Pedrosa, again struggling against the pain. Listening to him on Saturday as he talked about how the painkillers are starting to lose their effectiveness because he's been taking them for so long, you felt like a voyeur. Most people fervently hope that Dani, who despite your prejudices, is a thoroughly likeable and tough little guy, will take time out until he is pain-free and healthy.
Monday is the first time testing has been allowed under the new cost-cutting regulations and no-one is looking forward to the next two days more than Nicky Hayden. He had his best race of the season but had higher expectations, so Nicky's usual dawn-to-dusk approach to testing will hopefully confirm that the team are working in the right direction.
Valentino Rossi had many reasons for wanting to win today, but the one he talked about first was Jerry Burgess, whose mother died yesterday. Vale simply said that the race was for him.
