Ryder Notes: Seventh Heaven
Sunday, June 01, 2008I said last night that the Italian fans would be happy if Rossi won again. He did and they were. Ninety-six thousand Italians had already sung their national anthem twice before Rossi appeared on the rostrum to accept the adulation of a track full of his delirious fans thanks to wins from Corsi and Simoncelli. It was an exhibition of total control over his strongest championship rivals, Pedrosa and Stoner, and takes his run of wins at the fabulous Tuscan track to seven; he has never been beaten here on a MotoGP bike.
There was encouragement too for Casey Stoner and Ducati after a couple of unhappy races, he was able to recover from a mistake and repass Pedrosa for second. Dani's Honda looked a little bit unstable—it looked like he had the wide front rim which would trade off a bit of stability in a straight line for the ability to get into Mugello's plethora of ess-bends, especially the downhill ones, with increased certainty. Of the four men who have dominated proceedings so far this year, only Jorge Lorenzo missed out: he lost the front on lap seven. Jorge had a simple explanation: pilot error. There were three other crashers. De Puniet's took Melandri with him—when your luck's out, it's really out, and Hopkins.
John's exit was caused by the quickshifter refusing to allow him to change down approaching turn one. This is on the quickest section of track we go to all year. Hopper was lucky to walk away from a big crash and made it very clear that he was not amused to be eliminated from consecutive GPs by mechanical failure. Just to add to Kawasaki's gloom, Anthony West was the final finisher, beaten by 41-year old Honda test rider Tady Okada who got the pneumatic-valve engined Honda to the flag safely and collected a couple of points as well. There is a distinct feeling of desperation surrounding Team Green.
Nicky Hayden wanted to use the new motor, but Honda wanted to race test it first. This is so far from the normal HRC way of doing things—the only other example anyone can bring to mind is Shinichi Itoh and the alleged fuel- injected 500 back in 1995. He was reckoned to have ridden that for the whole year not just one race, but it was a third factory Honda rider acting as a tester at the races. However, it is difficult to understand why Nicky wasn't allowed to race it. He isn't within a shout of the championship and is clearly demoralised. For once, HRC could give him something he wants.
On the other side of the garage, Dani Pedrosa clearly doesn't want to change things. A meeting is taking place right now at which the team manager will decide who rides what next weekend, although it is possible that each rider will start the Catalunya weekend with one conventional and one pneumatic engine. It is difficult to understand why Honda won't just give Nicky the new motor and hope it gives him the extra power he so obviously needs and switch off as many electronic controls as possible while they're at it. Today it looked like tyres were the problem, although they aren't mentioned in the official press release. There is also the unspoken assumption that if Pedrosa had wanted the new engine, he would have got it.
Colin Edwards led team-mate Toseland home in fifth and six to put the Tech 3 squad third in the Team Championship - a remarkable achievement for a satellite outfit. Colin was happier with fifth at Mugello than he was with third at Le Mans where he thought he should have won. Previously, he has had a best of ninth here.
If you are looking for a ride of the day—Rossi excluded—then it has to be Alex de Angelis, last coming out of the first corner and fourth at the flag.
Valentino Rossi now leads the championship by twelve points, he's won three in a row and is heading for a run of tracks that he loves and has a great record at. The bookies aren't taking a lot of bets against him.

Ryder Notes: Barca
by julian ryder, on the ground in catalunya
Monday, June 09, 2008Pneumatic valves? Who needs them? Dani Pedrosa doesn't; he ran away from the field today to win his real home GP—he's from a suburb of Barcelona about three miles from the Circuit de Catalunya. He has now won all three GP classes here.
Quite frankly, no-one saw which way he went. He extended his lead to over eight seconds without ever conceding time to the chasing group and was able to ease up towards the flag. It was an awesome display but at least he looked like he was working hard. How does 1min 42.61sec on the first flying lap sound - 0.4sec under Nicky Hayden's lap record, which was set on a 990 in 2006. Dani was even faster next time round, and again next time. He had a lead of 2.8sec after four laps, 7sec after ten, and by lap seventeen of the twenty-five he was 8sec ahead. It was an intense but lonely race, Dani even admitted to losing concentration while 'all alone' at one point. Whatever 'small adjustments' were made after qualifying, they worked. There was also the small matter of the new frame. Pedrosa had one to start the weekend and a second arrived and was fitted to his second bike on Friday night. The Michelins did their job too. Dani has been putting pressure on HRC and his tyre supplier since Mugello, only too well aware that if he was to beat Valentino Rossi he couldn't afford to concede the slightest advantage.
It was very noticeable that Rossi and his crew celebrated their hard-fought second place victory over Stoner as if they'd won the race itself. As he'd started from ninth on the grid and finished the first lap in eighth, you can see why they were happy with the result. Stoner tried everything, the Desmosedici looked as recalcitrant as it ever has, spinning everywhere, snapping sideways, losing the front a couple of times. No doubt about it, the Champ was working hard. The other three Ducatis had the sort of tough weekend they've got used to with Toni Elias suffering the most after jumping the start and then being black-flagged at his home race. Andrea Dovizioso was fourth, his best result since the opening race of the year, on what is still a stock Honda. He is looking more and more like a contender for a factory bike next year.
Now the calendar switches from tracks with kilometre-long straights to a run of circuits where out and out power isn't so significant--Donington, Assen, Sachsenring, Laguna.
Unfortunately, Loris Capirossi is highly unlikely to be at Donington after suffering a hand injury when he crashed with de Angelis.
Notes:
# John Hopkins rode with cracked vertebrae and was rewarded for his bravery with points.
# Sete Gibernau spent a lot of time in their pit with his old race engineer - who also happens to be a very good friend. He wasn't confirming or denying rumours of a come back.
# Honda are due to test their pneumatic-valve engine Monday and Tuesday.
# Ducati are due to test their '09 bike - with rumoured carbon-fibre frame Monday and Stoner may ride it Tuesday.
# Suzuki will have a new chassis to test after Brno.
# Marco Melandri seems even more depressed than in previous races, if that were possible. He pulled in several minutes before the end of warm-up.

Ryder Notes: Sixteen & Counting
by julian ryder
Friday, June 27, 2008John Hopkins is out of the Dutch TT, the German GP and possibly Laguna Seca as well after crashing at high speed in qualifying this afternoon. He crashed in the very fast Ramshoek, the same corner that claimed Loris Capirossi yesterday and Nicky Hayden who was following reported he lost the front very early in the corner. Hopper then speared into the tyre barrier feet first. He has a broken left ankle, and two breaks in the tibia, one an old fracture that has opened up again. There is also the possibility of compression damage to the knee.
On track, Casey Stoner is taking up where he left off in Donington. He's been frighteningly quick in every session and set pole position on a tyre he didn't like that much after he'd 'made mistakes' on his best qualifier. Incidentally, he only puts three qualifiers in his allocation, most of the rest take four.
Dani Pedrosa is second--amazingly it's his first front row start in MotoGP at Assen, and Rossi is third. Vale lost out on pole in the final sector of the track and says he will have to up his race pace if he wants to fight for the win. Last year he came from deep on the grid to catch and beat Stoner in an epic encounter, most of us want to see a rematch.
The suggestion to replace the 250s with some sort of 600cc device took another step forward when the MSMA's suggestion was rubber-stamped by the Grand Prix Commission. Intriguingly, any manufacturer who wants to take part in the new class must declare their intentions to the FIM and Dorna by the end of July. It is assumed that these engines will have to be prototypes, but the word 'prototype' is notably by its absence from the FIM press release.

Let The Lawsuits Begin

Friday, June 27, 2008The FIM and Dorna released this information today, foretelling of a 600 class in 2011.
This just in:
A-Style TT Assen - Friday 27th June
For immediate releaseThe FIM today made the following announcement:
The Grand Prix Commission, composed of Messrs. Carmelo Ezpeleta (Dorna, Chairman), Claude Danis (FIM), Hervé Poncharal (IRTA) and Takanao Tsubouchi (MSMA), in the presence of Mr. Paul Butler (Secretary of the meeting), in a meeting held today at the circuit of Assen, unanimously decided to introduce the following change to the FIM Road Racing World Championship Grand Prix Regulations.
Technical Regulations
2.11 Fuel, Oil and Coolants
2.11.2 Unleaded petrol will comply with the FIM Grand Prix specifications (in conformity with the new EU Standards) if:
a) it has the following characteristics:
Sulphur (mg/kg) 10 (instead of 50) application as from 1.1.2009
Replacement of the 250cc class
For application from 1.1.2011, the Grand Prix Commission accepted the following proposal, taken by the majority of members of MSMA: 4-stroke engines of 600cc maximum and 4 cylinders maximum. A request will be sent to all manufacturers. The candidatures of the manufacturers interested in taking part in the new class must be sent to the FIM and Dorna by July 31, 2008 at the latest. More precise technical specifications will then be discussed and established.

Harley-Davidson Acquires Both MV Agusta & Cagiva!
Friday, July 11, 2008This just in from Harley-Davidson:
HARLEY-DAVIDSON TO ACQUIRE MV AGUSTA GROUP
EXPANDING PRESENCE IN EUROPEItalian Company Known for Premium, High-Performance Motorcycles
Milwaukee, Wis., July 11, 2008 -- Harley-Davidson, Inc. (NYSE: HOG) today announced the signing of a definitive agreement to purchase the Italian motorcycle maker MV Agusta Group (MVAG). Under the agreement, Harley-Davidson will acquire 100 percent of MV Agusta Group shares for total consideration of approximately 70 million euros ($109 million), which includes the satisfaction of existing bank debt for approximately 45 million euros ($70 million). In addition, the agreement provides for a contingent payment to Claudio Castiglioni in 2016, if certain financial targets are met. MV Agusta Group is privately held, with the Castiglioni family owning 95 percent of MVAG shares.
The acquisition is expected to close in several weeks, pending the satisfaction of contingencies and receipt of regulatory approvals. Harley-Davidson intends to fund the transaction primarily through euro-denominated debt.
MV Agusta Group has two families of motorcycles: a line of exclusive, premium, high-performance sport motorcycles sold under the MV Agusta brand; and a line of lightweight motorcycles sold under the Cagiva brand. MV Agusta's F4-R motorcycle, powered by a 1078cc in-line four-cylinder liquid cooled engine, is rated at 190 hp. The company sells its products through about 500 dealers worldwide, the vast majority of them in Europe. In 2007, MVAG shipped 5,819 motorcycles. During 2008 MVAG has significantly slowed production due to financial difficulties.
"Motorcycles are the heart, soul and passion of Harley-Davidson, Buell and MV Agusta," said Harley-Davidson, Inc. Chief Executive Officer Jim Ziemer. "Both have great products and close connections with incredibly devoted customers. The MV Agusta and Cagiva brands are well-known and highly regarded in Europe. They are synonymous with beautiful, premium, Italian performance motorcycles," Ziemer said.
Harley-Davidson, Inc. plans to continue to operate MV Agusta Group from its headquarters based in Varese, Italy. Following closing, the first priority will be to appoint a leadership team to include a new Managing Director and to resume the manufacture of current models.
Current MV Agusta Group Chairman Claudio Castiglioni will continue in a leadership role as Chairman and will play a major role in future product development. Design Chief Massimo Tamburini will continue his leadership of MV Agusta Group's world leading sport-bike design studio.
"We take enormous pride in MV Agusta and Cagiva motorcycles," said Castiglioni. "Our riders seek an uncompromising experience in premium performance motorcycles. And with Harley-Davidson's deep understanding of the emotional as well as the business side of motorcycling, I have great confidence that our motorcycles will excite customers for generations to come."
According to Ziemer, the acquisition is intended primarily to expand Harley-Davidson, Inc's presence and footprint in Europe, complementing the Harley-Davidson and Buell motorcycle families. Retail sales of Harley-Davidson motorcycles have grown at a double-digit rate in Europe in each of the last three years, as the Company has increased its strategic focus on global markets.
"The acquisition of MV Agusta Group will enhance Harley-Davidson, Inc's position as a global leader in fulfilling customer dreams and providing extraordinary customer experiences. We look forward to a long relationship with the MV Agusta and Cagiva families of customers and employees," said Ziemer.

kanyargós pálya, itt nyernie kell!!!Ryder Notes: Here We Go Again ..
by julian ryder, on the ground in germany
Friday, July 11, 2008The Sachsenring is a short track, it is the place in the calendar where riders have the throttle fully open for
the smallest percentage of the lap, and yet Casey Stoner spent most of today around three-quarters of a second
quicker than anyone else. Only a typically spirited charge from Alex de Angleis late in the second session got
the gap down to under half a second. Third-place man, Colin Edwards, was nearly 0.9 slower than Casey but was
the first Michelin user. This track was surfaced before last year's race and appears to have almost an excess of
grip--Casey went through one front tyre in nine laps this afternoon and suffered one big crash on the fast
downhill. He's got some friction burns on his elbows but otherwise seems unhurt. The satellite Ducati team is now under new management. Team principal Luis d'Antin has stepped aside for
unspecified reasons. Negotiations are on-going between lawyers for d'Antin and majority shareholder the Pramac
company over who owns what. Alice will continue as the naming sponsor. If you are surprised to see James Toseland on the bottom of the timing sheets, you need to know he had a big
crash early on in the first session today and ran on on his last flying lap today. Anthony West, the lone
Kawasaki man, was also having a good day until he crashed heavily and hurt his back. Loris Capirossi was
surprised to be hurting as much as he is after repair work following his Assen crash.Today's practice was held in dry but sweltering conditions. The weather for qualifying is likely to continue the
pattern of every race since Qatar having rain sometime in the first two days. Don't expect it to slow Casey down.ENDS

Ryder Notes: Attack Of The Killer Duck
by julian ryder, on the ground in germany
Saturday, July 12, 2008That's four in a row for Casey--not just four pole positions, but four pole positions won on the back of being fastest in free practice. Just in case you forget, he won the last two races setting the fastest lap both times.
You could say the boy is on a streak of good form.
Yet still he senses there are doubters, journalists who press him for details of the new electronics package he might have, or that one of his rivals has told the press he must have to be going so fast. A Dutch TV man asked Casey if his form was perhaps a function of the hard times he had at the beginning of the season. The Champ was inclined to agree: 'It was almost necessary to have the bad times... I looked hard at myself and tried harder, I learned how to push this bike further than it wants.'
Casey believes he is now reaping the rewards of that effort.
The bike has certainly improved, and so has the rider according to Valentino Rossi who believes both are stronger now than last year. Which is saying something.
The Aussie also appears to be drawing strength from what he perceives as the unwillingness of many elements in the media to give him the credit he deserves, or rather that they are so desperate to find a magic bullet that will explain his speed: 'It amazes me; nobody wants to believe.' This is said with an air of puzzlement.
Look at the time sheets and you may think it will take a miracle to stop Casey winning again tomorrow. However, this track is very hard on tyres, we have had a surprising number of crashes off the front on the high speed downhill and track temperature has differed by nearly fifteen degrees Friday to Saturday. Last year the brand new surface turned the usual form of 2007 on its head and the Bridgestone users had a nightmare, as opposed to the Michelin men suffering as they did at most other places. The questions raised by the temperature swing, patchy weather and multiple crashes won't be answered until a good way through the race. Remember Nicky Hayden coming from nowhere to third last year?
Nicky had one great moment this morning. On a fast lap and enjoying himself sliding the bike at full lean in a fast lefthander he went inside Valentino, who was touring on an out-lap so Nick spun up the rear and and laid some smoke. The camera cut to the Ducati pit, catching Casey grinning under his visor and his mechanics laughing and applauding.
You can still have fun at MotoGP.
