A Borderlands 2 egy cel-shaded grafikájú rpg elemeket tartalmazó fps. A játék folyamán küldetéseket kell teljesíteni (a Pandora nevű bolygón) a kiválasztott karakterrel, egy úgynevezett Vault Hunterrel. Ezek a küldetések lehetnek a főszálhoz tartozóak, illetve opcionálisan teljesíthető mellékküldetések.
